Our Philosophy
Rooted in Tradition. Focused on Building Community.
A Place to Be Themselves
At SJYC, we believe that camp works best when kids feel safe, supported, and free to be completely themselves. That’s why we create an environment where every camper and CIT is known by name, encouraged to try new things, and celebrated for who they are — not just for what they do.
We don’t rush kids to grow up. We let them laugh, explore, be silly, and gain confidence at their own pace — all while surrounded by caring role models and new friends.
Growth Happens Naturally
Campers don’t sit through lectures or team-building lessons — they live them. Whether it’s learning to sweep a cabin as a group, joining a hike they were nervous about, or finally getting up during skit night, growth happens in everyday moments. We give campers the chance to make meaningful choices and develop independence in a way that feels natural, not forced.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s progress. It’s courage. It’s knowing that your bunkmates have your back — and that your counselors will cheer you on every step of the way.
Led with Heart
Our staff are more than supervisors — they’re mentors, cheerleaders, and trusted adults who care deeply about the campers and CITs in their care. We choose people who model respect, patience, and playfulness, and who help create a culture where kindness comes first.
From the dining hall to the trails to the flagpole each morning, our camp community runs on connection — not competition.
The Heart of It All
After more than 75 summers, we still believe camp should be fun, low-pressure, and full of chances to discover something new — about the world, about others, and about yourself.
We design every day with one big idea in mind: when kids feel safe and seen, they grow. And we’re proud to be a small part of that growth, one campfire at a time.
